Most of us don't need advice. We need space.

Somewhere to think out loud without being interrupted, fixed or judged. Someone who listens properly, asks the question you've been avoiding, and helps you arrive at an answer that was yours all along.

That's coaching. And it works whether you're facing a career decision, a relationship shifting under your feet, or a sense that something needs to change.

Coaching has a reputation problem. Let's clear it up.

Say the word "coach" and plenty of people picture a motivational speaker, a whiteboard of goals, or someone charging a fortune to repeat your own plans back at you. Fair enough. That version exists, and it's worth avoiding. The real thing is simpler and more useful: a trained, confidential conversation with one purpose, which is helping you think better about the things that matter most to you.

It isn't therapy

Therapy looks back to heal. Coaching looks forward to build. If therapy is what you actually need, I'll say so, and I speak from experience.

It isn't advice

You're not paying me for answers. You're paying for questions that get you to your own, which are better, because you'll actually act on them.

It isn't a pep talk

Motivation that arrives from outside leaves the same way. The kind that stays is the kind you find in your own reasons, and that's the kind we go looking for.

What it is: an hour where you think out loud, with someone trained to listen properly, challenge carefully, and keep the conversation pointed at what you actually want.

I wish I'd had this.

Someone who'd lived through a few things themselves, divorce, burnout, anxiety, fatherhood, and could be real with me about being a man and being happy.

Too many of us keep it all to ourselves, because that's what we learned to do. Coaching gives you somewhere to put it down and look at it properly, then decide what you want to do next. There's no fixing and no judgement here, just honest, useful conversation.

There's a whole stream for this: coaching for men

Where do you want to start?

Coaching works the same everywhere. The principles don't change whether you're working through a challenge at work or a change at home, which is part of what I love about it. But lived experience lets me go deeper in some places than others, so each of those places has a stream of its own.

Communications

You find the words for everyone else. So who helps you find yours? Coaching, mentoring and consulting for comms people, internal comms especially.

More for communications people

Agency

Between the client and the work, there's you. For account managers, creatives and everyone holding the agency together.

Men

Relationships, money, business, parenting, being a man. The conversation most of us never get around to having.

AI

You already know how to do this. If you can hold a conversation, you can use AI, and there's a working-session package to prove it.

More on AI coaching

No frameworks, no forms. Just a conversation.

We start by getting to know each other. From there we agree an overarching goal, then keep each session anchored in whatever feels most pressing on the day. What's live right now almost always feeds the bigger picture, and my job is to help you see how.

Founding client rate
£45 per session

While I complete my ICF accreditation hours, sessions are £45. You get committed, properly trained coaching at a rate that reflects where I am on that journey. It won't stay at this level, but if you start with me now, we'll agree your rate together before anything changes.

Your first conversation is free. A full hour, online or in person, to see whether we're a fit. No pitch and no pressure.

Paul Pilbeam, coach and founder of Between Better

I'm Paul.

I've spent more than twenty years in communications, agency side and client side, selling ideas, building teams and writing words that had to earn their keep. Along the way, life handed me the other kind of education. Divorce. Burnout. Anxiety I didn't have a name for until I did. Fatherhood, which remains the best and most humbling job I've ever had.

Coaching found me through both. I work at a coaching company, surrounded by people quietly obsessed with what it can do, and I've sat in the client's chair myself, so I know what a good session feels like from the inside. I'm a natural listener. I give people room to think, and I challenge that thinking when it needs challenging.

I called this Between Better because that's where the work actually happens. Not at the start, and not at some imagined finish line, but in the space between who you are today and who you're becoming. Nothing beats watching someone land on the lightbulb moment they've been circling for months. That's why this exists.

What is coaching, exactly?

A confidential, structured conversation with one purpose: helping you think better about the things that matter most to you. No scripts, no judgement, no advice you didn't ask for. Sessions are typically 45 minutes, online or in person.

Is coaching the same as therapy?

No. Therapy tends to look back in order to heal, while coaching looks forward in order to build. If therapy is what you actually need, I'll say so. I've benefited from it myself.

How much does coaching cost?

Sessions are £45 at my founding client rate while I complete my ICF accreditation hours. Your first session is a free one-hour introductory call, online or in person.

Where are you based, and do you coach online?

I'm based in Guildford, with in-person sessions in Guildford and Central London. I also coach online over Google Meet, so wherever you are in the world, location is no barrier.

Do you offer evening sessions?

Yes. Daytime and evening sessions both work, online or in person.

What if I don't know what my goal is?

That's fine. Finding it is often the first piece of work we do together.

Do I have to commit to a number of sessions?

No. We'll talk about what makes sense during your free call, but there's no lock-in.

What happens in the free introduction?

An hour, online or in person. You talk, I listen, and we see if it clicks. If it doesn't, no hard feelings. I'll point you somewhere useful if I can.

Ready when you are.

One free hour of your time, to find out whether this is what you've been looking for.
